Este ano, na impossibilidade de fazer mais um passeio pelos fabulosos carnavais Portugueses, não quis que esta festa passasse despercebida mesmo para dois crescidos como eu e o Carlos. E claro, resolvi arregaçar as mangas, inspirar-me na minha mãe (que fazia sempre tudo à mão) e criar, eu mesma duas simples máscaras de Carnaval. Como o Carnaval é sobre fantasia resolvi rebuscar nas crianças que ainda existem dentro de nós e desenhar duas máscaras em feltro à medida dos gostos e fantasias de cada um. É muito interessante perceber que ao envergarmos uma máscara podemos optar por esconder a nossa personalidade e experimentar ser outra coisa durante um dia. Ora, quando abraçamos a possibilidade de a fazer à mão de forma consciente, podemos por outro lado revelar algo que, à partida, pouca gente conhece de nós. Portanto as minhas máscaras, mais do que para me esconder, serviram acima de tudo para me dar a conhecer um pouco melhor!
Assim, para mim fiz uma máscara de raposa. Já vos confessei, ainda que timidamente, que gosto de raposas. Mas a verdade é que tenho, isso sim, uma paixão inexplicável por raposas! É sem sombra de dúvidas o meu animal favorito. É curioso porque se pensarmos bem, as raposas são animais que provocam sentimentos muito díspares entre os humanos. Há quem aprecie a sua astúcia e inteligência, mas há também quem as considere oportunistas e um predador agressivo que prejudica o ser humano, tal como o “lobo mau”. Tenho um amigo que diz que as raposas são “as namoradas dos lobos” e naturalmente não gosta de lobos também. Esta relação entre o homem e os restantes seres vivos é um assunto que preencheu muitas horas dos meus estudos como bióloga e que ainda me deixa absolutamente apaixonada. Não se admirem até que exista uma imensidão de estudos e livros escritos sobre o assunto. E eu, como uma raposa que se preze, devoro-os todos!
Quanto à raposa, para mim, além de ser um animal belíssimo na nossa fauna autóctone, é também extremamente inteligente e protectora.
Para o Carlos fiz o mesmo exercício mas optei por fazer uma máscara de um super herói (que é na verdade a forma mais “infantil”, carnavalesca com que os meus olhos o poderiam ver). A escolha não foi difícil porque o Batman é o super herói mais amado de todos os tempos, e por ele em especial!
Há uma enorme variedade de materiais disponíveis e fáceis de utilizar. Para estas máscaras apenas precisei de feltro em três cores, cola (ou máquina de costura) e um elástico. Os moldes descobri aqui e aqui mas a vantagem de criarmos nós mesmos é a possibilidade de fazermos pequenas adaptações!
This year, sadly we are not going to visit the fabulous Portuguese carnivals. However I did not want this day to go unnoticed even for these two grown-ups like me and Carlos. And of course, I decided to get to work, inspire myself by my mother (who always did my costumes by hand) and create, myself, two simple masks of Carnival. As Carnival is about fantasy I decided to search the children that still exist inside us and draw two masks in felt that reflected our tastes and fantasies. It is very interesting to realize that by wearing a mask we can choose to hide our personality and try to be something else for a day. On the other hand, when we embrace the possibility of consciously doing it by hand, we can choose to reveal something that, usually we don’t transmit and that only a few people know about us. So this year my masks, more than hiding, were about to let people know me a little better!
So for me I made a fox mask. I have already told you, though timidly, that I like foxes. But the truth is that I have an inexplicable passion for foxes! It is without a doubt my favorite animal. It is curious because if you think about it, foxes are animals that cause very different feelings among humans. There are those who appreciate their cunning and intelligence, but there are also those who consider them opportunistic and an aggressive predator that harms the humans as badly as the “big bad wolf.” I have a friend who jokes that foxes are “wolves girlfriends” and naturally, he does not like foxes neither wolves! This relationship between man and other living beings is a subject that filled many years of my studies as a biologist and that still leaves me absolutely in love. So don’t be admired if I say that there is an immense amount of studies and books written on the subject. And, like a fox, I devour them all!!
As for the fox, at least for me, besides being a beautiful animal in our native fauna, I thing of it as an extremely intelligent and protective living being.
For Carlos I did the same exercise but I chose to make a mask of a superhero (which is actually the most “infantile”, “carnivalish” way my eyes see him, my personal super hero). The choice was not difficult because Batman is the most beloved superhero of all time, and for Carlos in particular!
There is a huge variety of materials available and easy to use to make your own mask. For these masks I only needed felt in three colors, some glue (or sewing machine) and an elastic. The patterns I discovered here and here but the advantage of creating this masks ourselves is that you can make small but great adaptations!
