No outono passado falei-vos do filme “How to make an American Quilt” onde os quilts americanos são uma parte importante da história. Pois bem, na continuação desta “série de posts” venho agora relembrar a querida Miss Marple, famosa personagem dos livros da Agatha Christie que adorava tricotar.
Para além dos livros,“Miss Marple” já foi abordada em filmes e séries de TV e o seu amor pelo tricô é um contínuo em todos eles! Na sua mais recente série, cuja personagem é partilhada entre Geraldine McEwan e Julia McKenzie, a querida mas perspicaz senhora chega a fazer uma camisola inteira para o sobrinho num episódio só!
O curioso é a forma como o tricô é introduzido na série. Por um lado cria todo um imaginário acerca da personagem: a imagem de uma senhora distraída nos seus afazeres, que não promete nada a ninguém e que passa despercebida entre todos. O tricô permite-lhe estar presente sem ser tida em conta, criar empatia pela sua pessoa, ao mesmo tempo que funciona como uma espécie de disfarce! Por outro lado está provado que o tricô pode ser um ofício muito importante para o pensamento, uma espécie de terapia, um descanso para a mente pelo seu ondular contínuo, mecânico e orgânico. Por esta razão não admira que, durante uma sessão de tricô, a brilhante Miss Marple deixe o cérebro atento aos pormenores permitindo-lhe fazer ligações que, à partida, passariam despercebidas e assim conseguir desvendar os crimes mais bem elaborados!
Outro pormenor curioso são as tradicionais bolsas de tricô que Marple usa regularmente e que, durante muito tempo passaram de moda: bolsas fundas com aberturas laterais, para possibilitar levar agulhas compridas, e uma pega de madeira ou metal onde o tecido fica preso em pregas. Tenho alguns modelos espalhados pelos mais variados livros de crafts e, inspirada por esta personagem icónica acho que vou dar ao pedal e costurar uma para mim!
Last fall I told you about the movie “How to Make an American Quilt” where American quilts are an important part of the story. Well, following this theme, today I remember the beloved Miss Marple, the famous character of Agatha Christie’s books that loved to knit!
In addition to the books, “Miss Marple” has already been covered in films and TV series and her love for knitting is a continuum in all of them! In the latest serie, whose character is shared between Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie, this insightful lady even makes an entire sweater for her nephew in one single episode!
The curious thing is how knitting is introduced in the serie. On the one hand it creates a whole imaginary about the character: the image of an old lady, distracted in her affairs, who promises nothing to anyone and that goes unnoticed among all. The knitting allows her to be present without being taken into account, to create empathy for her personage, at the same time that it works as a kind of disguise! On the other hand it is proven that knitting can be a very important craft for the mind, a kind of therapy, a rest for the thoughts because of its continuous undulating, mechanical and organic movement. For this reason it is no wonder that during a knitting session, the brilliant Miss Marple leaves her brain to work alone, attentive to the details, allowing her to make connections that would be unnoticed from the outset and thus unravel the most intricate crimes!
Another curious detail is the traditional knitting bags that Marple uses regularly and that have long gone out of fashion: deep pockets with side openings to carry long needles, and a handle of wood or metal where the fabric is caught making pleats. I have some models on the most varied crafts books and, inspired by this iconic character, I think I’m going to hit the pedal of my sewing machine and sew one for myself!
