Um dos compromissos de “ano novo” que fiz para este e os próximos anos foi tornar-me musicalmente mais culta no que diz respeito à música Pop. Desde que tenho memória que fui habituada a ouvir sobretudo música erudita e, quando às 8h00 chegava à escolinha, já tinha provavelmente ouvido o primeiro ato de um ballet qualquer, meia dúzida de corais de Bach ou três andamentos de uma sinfonia de Beethoven. Não me estou a queixar, foi a minha experiência musical. Obrigada pai! E mais rapidamente sou capaz de identificar os meus compositores favoritos do que escolher uma banda ou cantor pop. Contudo, com um aficionado por música em casa (que me ganha tanto na música pop, rock ou mesmo erudita!) senti que gostava de aprender mais acerca dos estilos musicais que andam por aí, sabendo definir melhor aqueles que eu prefiro e que gosto de partilhar. Não conheço nada de nada!
Por isso embarquei na grande aventura de ouvir toda a lista dos 500 melhores álbuns de todos os tempos da revista Rolling Stone. Está claro que depois destes meses todos não estou nem perto de terminar! Nada disso. Orgulho-me contudo de já ter ouvido os 100 primeiros (500-400), alguns que repeti e de cujos autores fui saber mais.
Foi a primeira vez que ouvi The White Stripes e que compreendi que Kiss não é hardcore apesar das capas dos álbuns. Recordei dois albuns de Pearl Jam que não ouvia desde os meus 18 anos e outros quantos de Coldplay e da fabulosa Amy Winehouse.
Foi a primeira vez que ouvi um album completo da Cyndi Lauper, Manu Chao, Elvis Costello, George Michael, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John ou dos inconfundíveis R.E.M ou Dire Straits. Foi quando percebi que “Killing Me Softly With His Song” era dos Fugees (Yeah, shame on me…!).
Ouvi coisas de Police que não diria que eram Police (e fiquei a saber que nem todas são cantadas pelo Sting) e um U2 desconhecido para mim! Confirmo que Def Leppard e PJ Harvey não são a minha onda e que Nirvana tem dias que sim, tem dias que não… Reconheci que o meu Beatle favorito é o George Harrison, sem dúvida. Percebi que gosto de Eric Clapton e The Doors mas que não sou grande fã de Bob Dylan.
Agora tenho 400 álbuns pela frente e ainda muito para aprender! Estou a adorar o meu desafio pessoal.
One of “New Year” commitments I made for this and the next few years was to become more musically cultured with regard to pop/rock music. Since I have a memory I was used to listening mostly to classical music. And by 8:00 am while my father was driving me to school I had probably already heard the first act of a ballet, half a dozen Bach choirs, or three movements of a Beethoven symphony. I’m not complaining, it was my musical experience,, that’s it. Thanks Dad! I can identify my favorite clasic compositors more quickly than choose a band or pop singer. However, with a music aficionado at home (who beats me in pop, rock but also in classical music!) I felt like I wanted to learn more about the music styles out there, knowing better the ones I prefer and that I like to share. I feel I don’t know anything at all!
So I embarked on the huge adventure of listening to Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 best albums of all time. Of course, after all these months, I’m not even close to finishing! Not at all. However, I am proud to have heard the first 100 albums (500-400), some of which I repeated and whose authors I learned more about.
